Wild animals become earthquake forecasters
www.chinanews.cn 2007-05-22 17:51:25
Chinanews, Beijing, May 22 C An earthquake forecast station was
established at the Beijing Wild Animal Zoo in Daxing district on Monday.
This is the first time that China uses wild animals to predict
earthquake. Animal keepers have selected about 50 kinds of animals from
the zoo and put them in seven monitoring centers. By keeping a close
watch on animal behaviors, animal keepers hope that their abnormal
behaviors which they usually display preceding any earthquake can help
human beings to better predict earthquakes, the Beijing News reported.
Many animals are very sensitive to the electromagnetic waves and the
infrasonic sound that usually occur before earthquakes, said Liu
Xincheng, deputy head of the Beijing Wild Animal Zoo.
Last year, an earthquake hit Wenan County in Hebei Province. The
earthquake also influenced Beijing. Before the earthquake occurred, the
parrots in the Beijing Wild Animal Zoo showed abnormal behaviors. With no
one to disturb them, these parrots flew up and down impatiently. It was
only after the earthquake that the parrots abnormal behaviors
disappeared. The parrots abnormal behaviors are the reactions that
animals usually display before an earthquake happens, some zoologists
said.
Most wild animals are used to living in a natural environment. So it is
more accurate for us to predict an earthquake by watching their
behaviors, since wild animals can usually respond to the abnormalities in
nature more quickly. The Beijing Wild Animal Zoo happens to be located in
a fault zone. So it is a very good place to forecast earthquakes, Liu
said.
This is the first time for zoologists to place an earthquake station
inside a zoo and let wild animals become earthquake forecasters, said
Deng Baoyin, director of the Daxing District Seismological Bureau.
The wild animal earthquake forecast center is divided into four segments
and seven observation areas. An animal keeper is assigned to every
observation area. They have been dealing with animals for more than 10
years. Every week, the animal keepers will summarize all information
collected in that week and report the information to seismological
departments. If they notice that the wild animals show some abnormal
behaviors that may be connected with earthquakes, they will report the
situation as quickly as possible.
