"Big Ben in China" to be repaired

Chinanews, Shanghai,May 29 - The Bund Customs Clock Tower, a 79-m-tall
clock structure known as "the Big Ben in China" will be closed for repair
beginning on June 1, which will last for 4 months.
The clock tower, the tallest in Asia and the 3rd tallest in the world
after the Big Ben in London and the clock tower in Moscow, was completed
in 1927. It first struck hours on New Year's Day of 1928 with the melody
of Westminster. In 1966, its tune was changed into Dongfanghong. Before
October 1, the National Day, of 1986, the tune was changed back to
Westminster.
In 1997, the clock was temporarily stopped for a while.
In 2003, the tune was changed back to Dongfanghong..
